Dogs Trust Emma says:Many of you will know Dogs Trust by its former name of the National Canine Defence League or NCDL. I have been a patron of the charity for several years now and count among its myriad admirers. The charity not only helps thousands of dogs in this country it also has projects abroad. The centres here are superb and the charity is always looking at ways that they can improve the lives of the dogs in their care. Many of the centres have been updated and redesigned with kennels that have features such as clear fronts so that there are no bars. The kennels are light and spacious and the staff are dedicated to the dogs in their care. Clarissa Baldwin, the CE of the charity, is one of the most awe-inspiring people you could ever hope to meet. She has done wonders for the charity and is a strong and passionate voice in many areas of animal welfare. If you are ever considering taking on a dog please go and have a look round a rescue centre first. There are thousands of dogs that will make wonderful and loving companions waiting for you to take them home. Dogs Trust says: In the beginning Founded in 1891 to protect dogs from torture and ill-usage of every kind, Dogs Trust, formerly known as the NCDL, has now pursued its goal with determination for over one hundred years. A 'small party of gentlemen' brought together by Lady Gertrude Stock in a room off the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington during the first ever Crufts dog show, vowed to campaign for the protection of strays, the provision of proper veterinary care and to campaign against muzzling, prolonged chaining, and experimentation on dogs - a widespread practice at the time. Vowing never to turn down a reasonable request for help, Dogs Trust began operations funded entirely by donations from members and supporters. In 1902 membership totalled 1000 for the first time and continued to grow steadily to 6,500 members by 1910. Today Dogs Trust has over 300,000 members and supporters. In the last year... Dogs Trust reported a fantastic 7 % increase in the number of dogs rehomed, despite the closure for rebuilding of two of our larger Centres for much of the year. We found new homes for a total of 9,111 dogs last year. Our Regional Campaigns made a real difference to the lives of dogs. One North-East council reported an amazing 40% drop in the number of strays picked up, and a 48% drop in the number of dogs destroyed - all thanks to our work. Dogs Trust Chief Executive Clarissa Baldwin, with her rescue dog Bumble, joined Dogs Trust in 1974 when the organisation was just a small team. Today she heads an organisation employing more than 400 staff at our Head Office, 15 Rehoming Centres and out in the field.
