Gifts of true love You can imagine how pleased my husband was this morning when he went to put his trainer on and found that one of our cats had lovingly deposited half a dead mouse in it. Now some people would find this highly unpleasant but being a stoic man and also a cat lover he simply wandered over to the bin with said half mouse and resignedly laid what was left of the wee creature to rest. This episode then prompted him to tell me with a rather whimsical look on his face about his beloved cat, Chui, who used to bring him chips. She did this, he assures me, very lovingly and proudly in a ‘mi casa es su casa’ type way. This then reminded me of a few years ago when I had returned home from work and found a very nice owl puppet on our kitchen floor. I thought Joe must have got it for the dogs but he didn’t know anything about it. We didn’t give it much thought until the next day a sock puppet arrived in the kitchen, which we thought was quite odd, as you can imagine. Over the next few days we became the guardians of several more until one day I came home from work earlier than expected. I wandered into the kitchen only to see Brian, our most mischievous cat, half way through the cat flap with a rather handsome Sooty grasped in his mouth. Brian looked at me in horror and froze halfway through in what I think was a vain attempt not to be noticed. Realising after only a second that he was rumbled he hauled Sooty in and dropped his catch on the floor and sauntered off in a casual way that only cats can. The next day a pair of blue, men’s slippers arrived and that must have been the last of the swag because nothing else was forthcoming. Brian has, over the years, brought three pairs of slippers home. Surprisingly he never only brings one, always a pair. Cats bring prey home because they view their owners’ house as a safe haven in which to enjoy their kill. Presumably with the provision of a healthy diet and no need to eat wildlife, these ‘kills’ of Brian’s are simply gifts. We’re still waiting for him to bring the first wallet…
