o You Want to be a Vet

How do I get more experience?

Hi there. After reading your website and all about you, I feel even more determined than ever to become a vet. I am 15, and have wanted to be a vet since a very young age. I have 3 years work experience in two stables, three weeks on a local farm, and one week in a veterinary surgery. I am trying to get more work in veterinary surgeries; however none are willing to give me work experience for quite a while. I seem to have hit a brick wall with my work experience. I am getting my GCSE results this month, and hopefully they will be good. I was wondering if you had any ideas of ways I could get more experience. I am very limited to my area as I have no way of getting further afield other than bus.
Thanks for any help you can give me. Xxx
Jo

This is a very common scenario unfortunately. Firstly, I will say that you sound very determined and you have already notched up a good amount of experience by the sounds of it. Also, I hope your results were everything you hoped for. As far as the vets go I’m afraid it is simply a matter of perseverance and pestering! Write to all of them every couple of months and you could even go in and ask to speak to whoever it is who sorts out their placements. Many vets get very booked up in holidays but you could offer to go in and help out one or two evenings a week or on a Saturday morning during holidays or when you are at school. This may suit them better because they are unlikely to have other students there at those times and you should still get to see some stuff because evening surgery often goes on until 7pm or later in many places. They might also be grateful of a little free cleaning if you’re up for it. Don’t give up just yet, you’ve got plenty of time and when they realise you are very keen and not just time-wasting (like some students do) you should be able to get some work. All the best of luck and let me know how you get on.
