Will an army start be detrimental later? Hi, I am hoping to become a vet and all generations of my family have been in the army and I would love to do the same. However if I was to join the Army veterinary corps and later became a civilian would the civilian veterinary practices penalise me for it? Hazel Mitchell
I have no direct experience of this myself but my gut reaction would be a resounding ‘no’. Lots of people go through vet school and their early career in association with the forces and we had a few in our year. It is accepted as the norm. The veterinary profession is a relatively small family and most vets are judged on merit and personality, not how they started off. I can’t see any reason why you would be penalised at a later date and in some ways it may be seen as a bonus to some practices because you will have experiences that make you possibly a more interesting person than another employee. If you are passionate about I would go for it. Emma
