o You Want to be a Vet

Can I work and study?

I recently decided, after no experience in the field at all that I would like to train to become a vet. I am 22 years old and have the ability to achieve high grades, all through school I was at the top of my class achieving A's. Unfortunately due to illness I did not attain very good gcse or A level results. Now I am in the situation where I cannot afford not to work. What paths are there, if any, for me to train to become a vet? i.e.: apprenticeships, home learning, and volunteer work for experience?

I admire your determination and wish you all the best but I may not have great news for you I’m afraid. It sounds like you will need to do you’re A-levels again to get the right grades to get to vet school. This you might be able to do as evening classes so you could still work but this would be quite hard I think. The vet course itself is impossible to do via any of the routes you mentioned because so much of it is practical and also it is a very intense course. Not only this but one of the big problems for people doing the course is that you also have to do unpaid work in the holidays as part of the course which causes some people financial difficulty because it precludes them earning a wage the way many other students supplement their income. Many vet students these days leave university with £40,000 of debt which is massive compared to when I came through. My only suggestion would be to contact all the universities offering the course and see if they have any suggestions for you. You could also look into vet nursing which you could train to do while working at a vets. Good luck and I’m sorry not to be more help.
