Too young for work experience Hi Emma, I’m only 12 years old and I’ve wanted to be a vet all my life. I've grown up with animals and I love them all to pieces. I’m dying to do work experience with animals but I’m too young at the moment!! Is there anything I could do now??? Please please please please reply Rebecca Rankin Rebecca Rankin
Well, this is a bit of a problem because many places have very strict rules about health and safety which make life difficult for lots of young, budding vets! It is still worth writing to all the local practices and see if you can even go along after school one or two nights a week or on a Saturday morning. Tell them you know you can’t do much because of your age but some places might let you just watch consultations even if you can’t do much else. Equally try the same thing with local kennels, catteries and stables, especially if you know the people who run them. Rescue centres might also be keen for a free pair of hands for dog walking or cleaning kennels. If all else fails at least they’ll know you’re keen for when you are old enough. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know. Good luck with it all and let me know how you get on. Emma
