o You Want to be a Vet

What else can I do?

Dear Emma,

I applied to study Veterinary last year and received two offers, one for the RVC (AAA) and one for Liverpool (AAB). Liverpool was my firm choice. Unfortunately I only managed to achieve ABB (as I missed an A in physics by 3% and chemistry by 6%, with an A in bio). So I am re-sitting chemistry and phys this year, as well as doing the Extended Project Qualification which I am basing on Blue Tongue. I have applied to Liverpool, RVC, Bristol and Nottingham. I have done lots of work experience including: 4 weeks at 4 different vets and every Saturday at a 5th vets, 2 weeks on a farm park, 2 weeks dairy, pigs, sheep, 7 days lambing, 1 week with Notts Mounted Police Force as well as CPL, Kennels, etc... And I have an interview at Langford in December. However, I was just wondering if you have any advice about what I could do during this year to make me stand out from the crowd, as I'm aware that if I'm re-sitting I need something extra to show that I have improved since last year although I'm back at sixth form full-time). I'll really appreciate any advice you can give and I'd love a reply!

Thanks Emma. Regards, Nicole.

Crikey, Nicole, it sounds like you’re already standing out! That’s such bad luck to miss by such a small margin and I’m sure you were devastated. I’d like to think that just the amount of determination you’ve shown to get the experience you have, re-sit and reapply would be enough to make it obvious that you are very single-minded and determined. However, I suppose we must never take anything for granted in this life. I would recommend that you get some references from some of the places you’ve worked like the vets and the police. I found this helped when I sent in my application. Personal comments on how friendly and hard-working you are and so on will help. I also wrote up case-studies from my time at the vets too and sent them with my application but I’m not sure whether you will remember specifics enough to do that now.

One other thing you might find helpful is to go to the websites of all the vet schools because they’re really useful. Many of them, if I remember correctly, have really good information on what they’re looking for in their students. I know many of them want rounded people with interests outside of vetting too so it’s also important not to be utterly absorbed in the animals and lose other aspects of your personality like sports and so on.

I hope this helps in some way and I’d love to hear how you get on and all very best wishes for you; it sounds like you deserve a place whatever happens!
