I want to specialise in wild animals Hey Emma, I want to be a vet who helps wild animals such as the big cats, elephants and giraffe etc. Will I still need to go on and do the experience with farm animals and pets like any other vet applicant before I go and specialise in the wild animals? Deanna BartonWorking with exotic types of wildlife sounds brilliant doesn’t it and I would love to do more work with wildlife and conservation myself. Basically the answer to your question is ‘yes’. The physiology and medicine/ surgery of many animals is related and being a vet is all about applying knowledge from one field and species to another. Whatever you want to specialise in you need to learn all the basics and cover all the species of farm and domestic pets before specialising in wildlife and exotics. You’ll find, for example, that learning about the digestion of ruminants like cows and sheep will help you when you come to study some of the wild ruminants because the basics will be so similar. Learning about all species is also ideal because many people find that their views and attitudes change with time and one day you might decide that dog and cats or farm work is what you will end up doing. Good luck with everything and let us know how you get on.
